Günther H. Oettinger: Europe risks being relegated

  • April 2, 2020

“If the EU does not provide more money for research, the continent will lose its technological lead to the USA and China”, writes Günther H. Oettinger in an article which is published today in the German newspapers Handelsblatt and Tagesspiegel.

The Corona crisis also threatens to make a double anniversary fall into oblivion, which was groundbreaking for the European Union: the Lisbon Strategy.
At an Extraordinary Summit in Lisbon in March 2000, the European heads of state and government adopted a programme to make the EU the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economic area in the world within ten years, i.e. by 2010. In 2010, they reaffirmed this goal with the “Europe 2020” programme. But the balance is sobering, Günther H. Oettinger sums up.
You can read the entire article in German at Tagesspiegel.de and Handelsblatt.
