The United Europe Working Group on BRICS+, hosted by HE Ambassador Stone Sizani at the South African Embassy, brought together with key stakeholders, including policymakers, civil society, business leaders, and experts, to discuss South Africa’s political and economic priorities post-BRICS Summit and its role as G20 President in 2024.
HE Ambassador Stone Sizani opened the United Europe Working Group session with an overview of South Africa’s political and economic landscape. South Africa remains committed to multilateralism, viewing BRICS as a platform for global cooperation, not an anti-Western institution. Representing half the world’s population and over a quarter of global GDP, BRICS offers opportunities for growth, development, and amplifying the Global South’s voice. South Africa seeks economic partnerships, not ideological alignments, and aims to reduce inequalities.
As G20 President in 2024, South Africa will prioritize solidarity, equality, and sustainable development, focusing on African interests. Central to this is the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to enhance intra-African trade, drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and promote industrialization.
Key Discussion Points:
- Supporting SME partnerships in South Africa
- Strengthening cooperation
- Positioning South Africa as a gateway to BRICS markets for trilateral partnerships
South Africa offers significant opportunities in manufacturing, including government support in special economic zones and skills development through exchange and “Ausbildung” programs. A special working visa could enhance engagement, and replicating the successful automobile sector value chain could be transformative.
Sectors for EU-South Africa Collaboration:
-
- Rail transport
- Hydrogen
- Logistics and shipping
The EU, as BRICS’ largest trading partner, should consider strengthening its engagement through bilateral and interregional partnerships, particularly with countries like South Africa and Egypt, while advancing negotiations with India and Mercosur to address global challenges and foster equitable growth.
United Europe thanks HE Ambassador Stone Sizani and participants for the insightful discussions and valuable contributions during the Working Group. The engagement of United Europe’s members is crucial in driving meaningful collaboration and progress.
