“Against today’s background Europe has become the battlefield between a carefully and intentionally designed liberal, democratic and law-based order, and Europe which existed prior to this design. Today, more than ever in my life, I have come to understand how fragile democracy and the rule of law can be if not duly protected. With today’s example of what politicians can do if not held accountable, I more than ever understand the concepts of civil participation, people’s voices and the role civil societies like United Europe play. This year Europe was put to the test to reveal how far members of the European Union can go to not let liberal democracy fall into decay. This is not the first time it happened, and I hope at the end Europe will emerge more democratic with more rule of law.”
