The European Green deal, coined as Europe’s new growth strategy, sets forth actions to enable Europe to achieve the status of a climate-neutral continent by 2050: EU countries must submit their investment plans to access the union’s “recovery and resilience” facility which holds €672.5 billion in loans and grants as part of the EU’s COVID-19 fund and recovery plans, to ensure a long-term, sustainable and inclusive recovery that promotes “green” and “digital” transition. The question remains how forward leaning are those investments and will it help Europe to rise to a Carbon Neutral Superpower? What needs to be considered when decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gases and can hydrogen be a viable solution?
