United Europe’s 11th Young Professionals Seminar will take place in Hamburg from October 6 to 8, 2017. For this workshop, we will focus on:
The Populist Challenge
With the Hamburg seminar, we will focus on the populist challenge facing Europe. Everywhere in Europe, populists have been gaining ground with an agenda directed not just against globalisation, but also against European integration. Yet a return to the nation state is unlikely to solve our problems.
According to recent studies, younger Europeans tend to be more willing to embrace the opportunities of diversity, globalisation and integration. Nevertheless, many are badly informed and disengaged from politics.
So how do we get the younger generation interested in actively shaping their future in Europe? How can we foster their European identity? And how can the next generation make its voice heard? These are some of the questions we will be discussing in Hamburg.
Our seminar will open with a conversation on populism between Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and Kai Diekmann, the long-time editor and publisher of Germany’s most important popular newspaper, the BILD-Zeitung. On Day Two, we are looking forward to a short workshop that Professor Ulrich Reinhardt, Scientific Head at the BAT-Foundation for Future Studies, will be conducting with our participants. His topic will be”Out of the Box: Thinking About the Future”.
The seminar will end with dinner on Saturday, October 7. We welcome this opportunity to invite the alumni of our earlier seminars to join us for dinner in Hamburg.
