If Europe didn’t exist yet, it would be high time to invent it. A Europe that looks to the future, helping us assert not only our interests and values in this age of globalisation, but also our way of life. It is difficult to overstate the importance of being able to live our lives as we wish. Europe is more than the single market and the Euro.
I think it important that we stand up for Europe. The Euro crisis has its origins in the fact that governments and the so called elites weren’t consistent when they decided on introducing the currency union. They simply didn’t think hard enough about the possible consequences of economic and financial imbalances. Now we need to improve the democratic legitimacy of future decisions for the Euro zone. In this, Germany and France still have a particular responsibility.
Of course, Europe needs to be competitive and diverse. But while that is beautiful and important, we also need to think about winning the hearts of the younger generation and the poorer people in Europe. They are also part of our society and have talents and ideas, just as older and richer citizens do.
